Summative Assessment of the unit “how do we organize ourselves” (PYP1)

      Release Time:2016年11月17日Author:国际部 Source

How do the PYP assess pupils’ learning, to urge them progress faster, to involve them actively in the process? Our PYP1 pupils gave us a satisfactory answer with their amazing performance on October 14th, 2016.

In the unit of “how do we organize ourselves”, pupils explored into different communities. They had themselves organized into groups and carried out a series of investigation activities such as field trips, data collection, interviews, etc. During the process of investigation, the pupils played the roles of thinker, inquirer and communicator and learned how to identify a community as well as how a community functions.

According to the content of this unit, the summative assessment consisted of five parts---presentation of reports (community), role play, the evolution of Chinese characters, compilation of math stories and English songs. The parents who witnessed the assessment are fully satisfied as the assessment not only reflect the mastery of the content knowledge but focus on students’ skills and attitudes.

As the judges, parents and teachers worked together the rubrics at the very beginning, then they wrote the score as the assessment progressed. They calculated the final score of every pupil afterward and delivered a speech of summary and evaluation.

The assessment is an organic part of our PYP course. It actively engaged the teachers, parents and pupils. Close cooperation and collaboration make the assessment works best.
