 OECIS DP Academic Integrity Policy

Philosophy/理念

OECIS believes that acting with honesty and integrity at all times is vital to healthy teaching and learning engagements. Guided by the philosophy of the IB, OECIS expects all members of the school community to develop, promote and maintain ethical qualities of personal honesty and academic integrity .

OECIS understands that a holistic education is attained under demanding circumstances that promote, and expect honest intellectual engagements. We also believe that producers of original works deserve the right to be, and are legally entitled to be acknowledged. Therefore, OECIS expects all diploma students to embrace the principles of academic integrity and personal honesty as they learn, discuss and share ideas. Our expectations are guided by the following attributes of the IB learner profile:

Inquirers: Students develop their natural curiosity. They acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research, and show independence in learning. They actively enjoy learning and this love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives.

Knowledgeable: Students explore concepts, ideas, and issues that have local and global significance. In so doing, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines.

Behaviour that may disadvantage another student is also regarded as academic misconduct. It also includes any act that potentially threatens the integrity of IB examinations and assessments that happens before, during or after the completion of the assessment or examination, paper-based or on-screen. This includes behaviour in school, out of school, and online. (Academic integrity policy, Page 3)

Acknowledging sources/

How can I make sure that I am not plagiarizing material? /

The simplest method of avoiding plagiarism is to honestly, accurately, and clearly acknowledge, by references in the body of your work and/or in a bibliography at the end, each and every piece of material you used in the production of your work.

All ideas and work of other persons, regardless of their source, must be acknowledged/

CD Rom, email messages, web sites on the Internet and any other electronic media must be treated in the same way as books and journals /

The sources of all photographs, maps, illustrations, computer programmes, data, graphs, audio-visual and similar material must be acknowledged /

Passages that are quoted verbatim must be enclosed within quotation marks and references provided /

All works of art, film, dance, music, theatre arts or visual arts must have their source/origin acknowledged /

Always use Turnitin in accordance with the school’s regulations /按照学校规定使用Turnitin软件。

Materials cannot be paraphrased without acknowledging the source /

Any text, image, or graph included in a piece of work has been copied or paraphrased from an AI tool must be appropriately referenced in the body of the work and be added to the bibliography.

Permitted collaboration/

Collaboration will be seen to include students working in groups in order to accomplish a task of shared goal. This permitted collaboration forms part of the assessment of students in the diploma programme, and all students are expected to participate in it at an equal level.

discussion with other students regarding issues raised by the assessment item. /针对评估项目产生的问题进行的,与其他同学的讨论;

discussion with other students regarding means by which to address the issues raised by the assessment item / 对解决评估项目中出现问题的不同方法,而与其他同学的讨论;

collaboration in the location of, and sharing sources of information relevant to the item of assessment / 根据评估项目中的共同的信息资源来进行的集体协作。

The following acts of collaboration are not permitted: /

collaborating with other students or persons in the writing of all or part of the student’s submissions for the assessment item/与其他学生或人员协作,书写该生评估项目提交论文的部分或全部;

collaborating with other students or persons in the writing of all or part of any other student’s submissions for the assessment item / 与其他学生或人员合作写作,代替书写别的学生的评估项目提交论文的部分或全部;

Acknowledging original authorship (Harvard style)/

There are many referencing styles used in acknowledging original authorship such as American Psychological Association (APA), Modern Language Association (MLA), Council of Biology Editors (CBE), Chicago, Harvard and many others. OECIS encourages the use of the Harvard reference style when acknowledging sources (Students can also use others referencing styles under the guide of subject teachers). The Harvard reference guide is available in the library and will be explicitly and regularly taught by teachers of subjects on offer in the school.

The in-text citation should contain quotation marks using the referencing style already in use by the school and the citation should also contain the prompt given to the AI tool and the date the AI generated the text.

Enforcement of the policy/

To ensure that this policy is adequately implemented and adhered to by all students and staff in the diploma programme, OECIS will use the Turnitin to monitor the academic integrity of all submitted works. The result of similarity of students’ work must be less than 10%. Students in the diploma programme will also be required to submit all drafts and notes taken with the final versions of their works.

School’s penalty for academic misconduct /

OECIS has zero tolerance for academic misconduct. If there is an established case of plagiarism against a student or a group of students after thorough investigation has been carried out, which shall involve the tendering of written statements by the student(s) and the teacher(s) that initiated the charge, the coordinator will send a situation report to the parents/guardians of the student(s)  indicating that no grade will be awarded for that particular assessment. Should this happen in an internal assessment, no grade will lead to the denial of the IB diploma.

In addition to the recording of no grade, further disciplinary actions will be taken against the student or students, with the possibilities of a suspension or an expulsion from the school.

Appeal procedure/

If a student feels wrongly accused and/or punished for academic misconduct, the student, within 5 working days, may send a written explanation to the coordinator stating reasons why the penalty should not be imposed.

The coordinator shall invite the teacher that initiated the charge to write another statement within 3 working days. Both statements shall then be forwarded to the principal to make a ruling on the case within 10 days of the appeal and decide whether (a) the act of misconduct was committed and (b) the punishment was appropriate.

The ruling of the principal shall be final and not subject to further appeal. /

Offences and their penalty (As outlined by IB)/

The IB is very clear about the need for strict adherence to the principles of academic integrity and personal honesty which OECIS abides by.

21.1 If questions arise about the authenticity of a candidate’s work before submission for assessment, the situation must be resolved within the school. If possible academic misconduct (for example, plagiarism, collusion) is identified after a candidate’s work has been submitted to the IB for assessment, the school’s DP coordinator must inform the IB as soon as possible.

21.2 When a school, an examiner or the IB establishes evidence to suspect academic misconduct by a candidate, the school will be required to conduct an investigation and provide the IB with statements and other relevant documentation concerning the case. If a school fails to support the investigation into possible academic misconduct, no grade will be awarded to the candidate in the subject(s) concerned.

21.3 If the IB notifies a school that a candidate is suspected of academic misconduct and that the IB has the intention of initiating an investigation, at the discretion of the head of school it is permissible for the candidate to be withdrawn from the session or from the subject(s) in which academic misconduct may have occurred. However, at the discretion of the IB the investigation into the suspected academic misconduct by the candidate may still proceed and a decision be reached on whether to uphold or dismiss academic misconduct. If a candidate is withdrawn from a subject no mark for that subject may contribute to the award of a grade in a future examination session.

21.4 Candidates suspected of academic misconduct must be invited, through the school’s DP coordinator, to present a written statement that addresses the suspicion of academic misconduct. If a candidate declines to present a statement, the investigation and decision on whether the candidate is in breach of regulations will still proceed.

21.5 The majority of cases of suspected academic misconduct will be presented to a sub-committee of the Final Award Committee. The sub-committee will normally comprise IB staff, school representatives, and chief/deputy chief examiners, but any group or combination of these persons may make decisions on cases subject to the approval of the Final Award Committee. The sub-committee will be chaired by the chair or vice-chair of the Final Award Committee, or a chief examiner nominated by the vice-chair.

21.6 Decisions of the sub-committee are made on behalf of and under the supervision of the Final Award Committee. After reviewing all statements and evidence collected during the investigation, the subcommittee will decide whether to dismiss the suspicion of academic misconduct, uphold it, or ask for further investigations to be made. If the sub-committee is unable to reach a decision, then the case will be referred to the Final Award Committee.

21.7 If the sub-committee decides that a case of academic misconduct has been established, a penalty will be applied in the subject(s) concerned. The penalty will, in the judgment of the sub-committee, be proportionate with the severity of the misconduct.

21.8 If no grade is issued for a subject that contributes to a candidate’s IB Diploma, no IB Diploma will be awarded to the candidate. DP Course Results will be awarded for other subjects in which no academic misconduct has occurred. Except in cases of serious or repeated misconduct, the candidate will be permitted to register for future examination sessions, which may include the session that follows six months later, if the relevant registration deadlines are met. In the case of an IB Diploma Candidate, if the session in which the academic misconduct has been established is the candidate’s third examination session towards achieving the award of the IB Diploma, no further IB examination sessions will be permitted.

21.9 If the candidate has already been found in breach of regulations in any previous session, this will normally lead to disqualification from participation in any future examination session.

21.10 If there is substantive evidence, the IB is entitled to conduct an investigation into academic misconduct after a candidate’s results have been issued. If academic misconduct is subsequently established by the Final Award Committee, or its sub-committee, the candidate’s grade for the subject(s) concerned may be withdrawn from the candidate which will also result in the withdrawal of his or her IB Diploma where applicable.
